There has been so much in the news lately about bloggers busting airbrushing scams, retouching and questioning just how "perfect" the print media's unrealistic representation of women is, that I feel like it's verging on revolution territory. Remember kids, when I was an impressionable young thing, there was no Internet around to tell me things like the ripped out ads of Kate Moss and Claudia Schiffer (who are remarkably, still around and working, which says a lot about how things have changed to an extent) were altered images of already ridiculously genetically gifted women. And maybe because I am kinda old school, well, I love a crazy escapist fashion or beauty image now and then. But more importantly, the fourth wall needs to be knocked down. It's a new day in that we have what were once considered media outsiders (bloggers) questioning the legitimacy of certain "traditional" injuries against women.

To get a more realistic handle on the difference between what men and women aspire to and what we think we do, Fabulous magazine, a U.K. rag I've never heard of, asked thousands of men and women to, um, weigh in on their bodies. And ya know what, I like where they're going with the results:
While women yearn for the waspish waist of a size 8 model, men hanker after a curvy size 12 with hips. Oh yes!

And that's not all. It seems all that time spent staring at the mirror making mental checklists of everything we'd change is a waste of time.

When we asked men what they would alter about their partner's appearance, the majority said they were perfectly happy, thank you very much.
You can see the full results of the study on their site. Keep in mind, this is the U.K. we're talking about here, but I think the visuals speak for themselves. And just like the Beatles and Bowie and Radiohead and Coldplay, great British trends usually trickle over the States in full force. I think it's good news...

I agree...I'm all about the glam....nothing like pretend. And I have to say that being a makeup artist and behind the camera and seeing all that goes into those images, it has totally helped MY self-esteem....ANYONE can look ANYWAY in a photo....just because someone looks a certain way in a picture has no bearing on what they actually look life in real life (with the exception of the super high-end fashion models on the catwalk....)

It is interesting today how things have changed very little over the years, the media portray women in so many different lights that you do not know what to think. However, confidience is the main trait that we all need; and understanding that the flaws that we have makes us separate from the people who live in vain. I hope that a study such as this can become a part of our lives that we so desperately.
