LET'S TALK ABOUT

![]() Meet Allure's Daily Beauty Reporter, Jessica Matlin. This Jersey girl has been a beauty buff since her tween years frequenting the local mall's Versace makeup counter. A former assistant makeup artist herself, J-Mat (what the Allure editors upstairs lovingly call her) knows that the art of a stunning look starts with a healthy, clean canvas. She proves her skin know-how this month in her Allure piece "Skin Magicians," where she gives the scoop on how models get their (oft-naked) bods flawless for skincare ads. So without further ado, "The Beauty Expert"'s expert gives us a PF-personalized report of the latest and greatest in skincare. If we were to open your medicine cabinet, what would we find?
Right after I awake and just before I go to bed are sensitive times--I can't deal with a bunch of bubbles going up my nose or some medicated gel cleanser stinging my eyes. I'm a feeble thing, so Eau Thermale Avene Gentle Milk Cleanser is critical to a good morning and a good night. This milky cleanser feels like lotion on the skin, and because it doesn't lather, smell, or sting, you don't have to squint your eyes too tightly, prevent the foam from getting into your hairline, or rinse a thousand times to get the cleanser off. Laura Mercier Flawless Skin Eye Crème also impresses me every single day. Every few hours, my under-eye area gets so dehydrated that I can actually feel it, and when I pat this stuff on, I can almost hear my skin cells guzzling in the moisture. Plus, it's non-greasy, so you can layer concealer on top of it without any trouble. What are your favorite travel products? Skincare wipes. Payot Les Demaquillantes Cleansing Wipes clean the skin, get rid of makeup, tone, and moisturize all in one. I'm also pleased about those little neat kits that include mini, flight-safe-sized essentials like moisturizer with sunscreen and eye cream. Though criminally expensive, M Lab's Travel Collection is really nice. With its neat leather zip pouch, simple packaging, and clear labels, it's a no-brainer. Which celebrity has the best skin? The obvious answer would be ScarJo, but we can't all be milkmaids, can we? That said, I go with Bridget Hall or Cintia Dicker. Both make freckles look sexy. Before them, all I had was Pippi to look up to. A gorgeous, fragranced oil makes your skin glow, leaves it supple to the touch, and gives you a lovely scented aura. I can't think of anything sexier. For the face, I love Darphin 8-Flower Nectar Aromatic Dry Oil. It's a blend of eight flowers (naturally), including jasmine, iris, neroli, and rose, and it's just so soothing. This is helpful, as you sure can't feel sexy if your body is a bundle of nerves, can you. And while Agent Provocateur Rose Massage Oil isn't really a body product per se, I find that working a few drops of it into my skin gives it a nice dewy quality, and it smells absolutely divine. Is there a skincare trend that you're currently loving? I'm really happy that companies are finding ways to make sun protection less of a nuisance. I'm pale, so because I burn and freckle, it's been long ingrained in me that sun protection is non-negotiable. Complete strangers on the beach have offered up their sunscreen to me. (It's so weird.) However, I'm pretty lazy when it comes to getting ready in the morning, so I can't be fussed with sloppy white creams that I have to blend for an hour. Now that beauty brands are rolling out more sunscreens than ever in the form of neat little quick-dry lotions, aerosol cans, powder brushes, wet wipes, and even face wash, there really is zero excuse to be lax about SPF. Any trends you think are ridiculous? The blind obsession with "natural" skincare lines. While I applaud the effort for living a more eco-friendly life, I don't think customers, or many of the skincare companies out there, are really being clear on what natural means. What do you think of cellulite creams? Do they actually work or are they a waste of money? I think you really have to be compliant with those cellulite products to see any results, and let's be real: Not everyone can be a little soldier, diligently massaging a caffeinated cream in strategic upwards motions night after night. Those products remind me of diet pills or even Slim-Fast: The companies make it plain that these puppies work only if you pair them with a sensible diet and exercise regimen. It's not using the products that is challenging, it's the supplementary habits that decrease the chances of their success. What about waxing? Any tips for post-bikini or -Brazilian? Number one: Don't feel compelled to take it all--or nearly--all off. It's not for everyone, and if this matters to you (and it's okay if it does), a lot of guys don't actually prefer it. I just saved you a lot of pain right there. Second, it's critical to use a post-treatment product to inhibit ingrowns and irritation. Completely Bare Bikini Bump Blaster and Bliss Ingrown Hair Eliminating Pads are great, because they take two seconds to use and aren't the least bit messy. Do you have an everyday body oil? Sonya Dakar Nourishing Body Oil in Cara Cara is a moisturizing blend of Sonya's famous Organic Omega-3 Oil Complex, sweet almond oil, and vitamin E, and it's spicy and heady, but never too hippie. How can we get lips looking seductive and soft? I use a teeny tiny drop of Orlane Extreme Line Reducing Lip Care every night (it feels like face lotion), and I never have chapped lips. So there you go. If you were going to take your very last bath on earth, what oil, salt, or bubbly brew would you use to make it especially soak-worthy? Payot Cristaux Mineraux. These peach-colored salts from the Dead Sea are supposed to remineralize your body. All I know is that I feel totally relaxed while I'm in them and even for hours afterward. And I know this sounds weird, but they make the water seem really soft and velvety. I confess: I throw a tremendous heaping into the tub, not just one capful (as directed). Do you have a favorite beauty icon? Who doesn't? I would say Laetitia Casta. She's looks sensual, glamorous, poetic, and natural all at once. And you can't peg her look down: She's far from a super-crunchy, minimalist beauty, nor is she a mean fashion plate. She's just gorgeous. Whether she's completely fresh-scrubbed or wearing only matte red lipstick, her look is always completely stand-alone. It's never referencing someone else. 2 CommentsLeave a comment |

I LOVE Laetitia Casta, too! And so many great product recommendations here from J Mat: both body oils sound amazing. Girl crush!
I love the whole m lab line actually. I started with the travel set too. It's expensive but the treatment is really good. Even works for me in the summer.
