Oh, how I adore the brutally honest, candid beauty assessments that Jezebel's Sephora Spy dishes out every now and then. Her latest rant is a real roller coaster ride through the shelves of your local favorite beauty product warehouse, bouncing from the real story behind lip plumpers, mineral makeup and the age old debate, does oil really cut oil, or what? You should def go check it out, but I wanted to add my two cents as well.

I agree with her view that most lip plumpers are pretty stoopid (and especially the idea that you probably should steer clear of anything that irritates on purpose or not), but I just can't abide by anyone dissing Lip Venom. It tastes so good (like sweet, cinnamon candy, but not the nasty kind), and everyone I know who uses it is obsessed. Although we could be blinded by the excessively cute packaging...

The Spy also touches on a controversial issue: derms and skincare experts alike will tell you that oily skin types would do well to actually cleanse with oil (idea being that drying out oily skin just increases sebum production, etc.), but as an oily type, I still find this so hard to swallow. But for some odd reason, when the Sephora Spy asserts that it is so, I believe her. I'm totally gonna bust out some Shu Uemura High Performance Balancing Cleansing Oil and get to work revisiting this all-important skin theory.

And, for me anyway, the most fascinating topic that the Spy touches on this week has to do with the face that don't see the light of day. Colonics are not currently available for purchase at Sephora, but I'm sure they'll come out with some DIY kit you can buy there and take home real, real soon. Apparently, all those toxins hanging out in your colon can wreak havoc on your health, and getting a cleanse (i.e. water pumped into your ass in order to irrigate) results in a number of benefits, the most visible of which is supposed to be better skin. Sounds to me like the Spy is having trouble finding a good one, but if she's in NYC, I'd recommend my homegirl and personal colon-tician, JoAnne over at Rejuvenation Plus. I haven't really gotten one in ages (the craze ended in about '04 for me), but there was a time when I was going regularly (har, har) and maybe it's selective memory but I seem to remember my skin looking fabulous that year. Anyhoo...

What I want to know is, where do you stand on the oil cuts oil side of the fence? And have you ever resorted to having a stranger stick a tube up your ass for a clearer complexion? Enquiring minds want to know.

Hey, EF, it's me, Courtney, your old pal from the beauty department at Jane. You know I think colonics are total bull, my theory being if you don't want nasty junk inside you, then don't eat the nasty junk. However, my dear boyfriend Kevin totally disagrees with me and loves a good ol' colonic. In fact, I seem to remember the two of you comparing, um, experiences with them? So maybe I should stop being a cynic and try it already. As for the cleansing oils, everything under the sun makes me break out, so I was wary about this as well. I have found that using a cleansing oil in the summer to remove sunblock and waterproof makeup is fantastic, then I follow with my regular cleanser, and the whole annoying process keeps me relatively zit free. Ok, I'm done now. Once a beauty editor, always a beauty editor I guess. xox!
